My poor parents are now stressed about whether they’ll find similar food back in South Africa as I seem to have taken a liking to a particular vanilla range here. I over heard them chatting about buying a new suitcase to load full of the stuff. What a change from all the worries about me not eating! It’s extraordinary to think that I couldn’t even touch food when I arrived here and wouldn’t even let a drop of fluid in mouth. The other children on the programme are also doing very well. Some younger and some older, have all started to eat. A few of the older ones are eating so well that they are gaining 100g a day and the doctors are considering taking their feeding tubes out before they go home.
Each child starts with a favourite food, one they can trust until they are tasting everything and desperately reaching out for food. It’s quite something to see as we were all so hesitant and afraid of food for so long. Once a child has discovered a food they can trust we eat in slow motion, sometimes taking three to four hours a meal. The parents have learnt to be very patient. I prefer to eat smaller meals more often so the folks are feeding me about 5 to 6 times a day with finger foods in between. This is still easier than tube feeding me via the tube 4 times a day with a continuous pump feed at night.
